If you know me, you know that I love having all kinds of herbal teas on hand. One thing is clear, we all tend to lean toward the mints, for our herbal tea of choice.
This isn't just me, by the way, but my husband too, and occasionally one of our boys. I am, by far, the one that loves just plain peppermint or Sleepy Time tea time and again. I have a few to choose from, and always run out of those ones first. For those that don't know, Sleepy Time tea by Celestial Seasonings has both peppermint and spearmint in that particular tea among other things.
Perhaps it is something my body is craving, in the same way I crave tomato soup. Regardless, its my favorite refreshing tea that I don't ever want to be without in my house!Oceansnsunsetshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846008437312233108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6473750153489822632.post-13056817636341953792011-10-06T20:17:00.000-07:002011-10-06T20:18:48.822-07:00Mentha suaveolens image<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 308px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLhTkWv9809OfKCNGlIp-zH-iEEOnfbUnLRi3vzIQpVmwyHH-Hr2l_9ab7eNp9Em3kjJb9AgY2B3g-ijpoqgBlIkHH857rspd7b9AFH8sNGYy-9KycXHQ7tdyvNZhGSdDbEK_SqVNl-JI/s400/Menthasuaveolens.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5660584276344936530" />Oceansnsunsetshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846008437312233108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6473750153489822632.post-27424750463155667442011-10-06T19:57:00.000-07:002011-10-06T20:01:51.220-07:00Peppermint Tea by Celestial SeasoningsI love herbal tea. Tonight I had some Peppermint herb tea by Celestial Seasonings. While I like that brand of tea, its nothing overly extraordinary compared to other teas. It smelled fantastic, like it was amazing though. Perhaps there is something to the packaging and freshness of a tea. In the ingredients, there is just one : Peppermint. My husband came upstairs, and said what kind of tea is that? He was standing over the newly brewed tea, and could smell it. I said, its peppermint. He said man that smells good. He also said that he often thinks he likes the smell of herb tea more than the taste.

I think there is a relaxing quality to peppermint, though some think it invigorating. I think its both, if that were possible. Why not make a cup of your favorite peppermint tea tonight? It is good for you, and so refreshing and relaxing all at the same time. If anyone has another brand that they love to use, let me know. I am always looking for new teas.Oceansnsunsetshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846008437312233108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6473750153489822632.post-1335511374492057372011-08-18T08:04:00.000-07:002011-08-18T08:08:24.261-07:00Mentha Photo with Flowers<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6Tv8ZSDIppwv56WnRuWolqC3a50qgv60pArzeL5UTwwZOtVjMzlOtGitUZP7iQPP2RzPDO0aKlowTIarcalNFTTysjxRqoP606GDtYJz8NSPU1NKqsT7LONXSyzTmql71MgHOmzGNhOw/s400/Unidentified_mentha%252C_Maramures.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5642212829746353490" />

Its fun to smell the different mints in a garden, and I have done this at a friends house before. The mints have been around for thousands of years, and enjoyed by many in that time.

Some Greek Mythology mentions mint, its origins, aroma, etc. We also see it mentioned in Biblical times. Evidently, the pharisees tithed with it, it was counted that important and valuable. The Romans of course, used mint often in religious ceremonies. They would wrap mint into wreaths to be worn on the head.

Of course many of us now know that mint is still used around the homes, in many gums and candies, and used to treat some different common ailments. For instance, it is known to stimulate and aid digestion, calming the system some. It can help in reducing cramping, aiding in relieving tension, and even a means to kill germs.

The fragrance of mint is used for a feeling of invigoration, a true natural remedy for fatigue. I didn't realize how true that could be until I got a wonderful strong peppermint bubble bath/shower gel one time. I kid you not, that smelled lovely, and I hope to find it again, as I got it at Bath and Body Works, though it was from a different line. It literally felt like it was "waking up the senses!"

Coolest thing of all, its delicious in a hot or iced tea. From green tea, black, herbal, you name it, I love it all. It just feels healthy. It has a milder and cooler flavor than peppermint. (though peppermint is great too.) Just as with peppermint tea, spearmint tea has been known to be a popular herbal remedy for relieving indigestion and heartburn. It can soothe and upset stomach.

It is also has been said that tea can help congestion and coughing. You can even add spearmint leaves to bathwater to relieve congestion and to provide a relaxing soak for your muscles.

(Disclaimer:
Please, never substitute anything you find here or elsewhere, for a doctors regular care. Your health is important..please rely first on a doctors care.)Oceansnsunsetshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846008437312233108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6473750153489822632.post-86667122159239151042009-12-25T16:00:00.000-08:002009-12-25T16:06:34.760-08:00Growing Spearmint from seedsIt is a joy to grow herbs. I have enjoyed it very much. Here are some tips for growing spearmint in your garden.

You will want to sow outdoors in the springtime, in a sunny to partial shady location. Make sure all danger of frost is past. Light aids in the germination process, so make sure to barely cover the seeds with a light layer of soil. You can sow seeds earlier if need be, or if you desire. 8 weeks before the last frost in your area, you can start seeds indoors.

Plant seeds no deeper than 1/4 inch, and space apart aproximately 12-18 inches. They grow to about 2-3 feet. They are a perennial plant.

Harvesting the Spearmint:
Harvest the leaves as they mature. If you choose to dry the leaves, the plants can be cut back to about 3 inches above the soil line, JUST before their flowers open. Engery in the plant can be put back into making more and new leaves, as opposed to exerting a lot of energy to make seeds, etc.
Enjoy!Oceansnsunsetshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846008437312233108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6473750153489822632.post-78082931873603927862009-12-25T15:52:00.001-08:002009-12-25T15:58:53.423-08:00Some of the uses of SpearmintFor Culinary Use:
You can use spearmint for hot or cold beverages, sauces, salads, jellies, meats and vegetables.

For use in the garden:
This is a spreading perennial that has aromatic foliage, especially when rubbed between your fingers. It has pointed, bright green leaves. In the summer time, spikes of lilac-pink flowers bloom. This herb is attractive in both borders and containers. They are hardy plants in zones 4-10.

Other interesting uses for spearmint:
You can use spearmint for household surface cleaning, believe it or not. You can add either dried or fresh spearmint to other cleaning agents such as water and vinegar. You can add to potpourri. Mint sachets can repel flies and moths.

*More to come soon, make sure to check back!Oceansnsunsetshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846008437312233108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6473750153489822632.post-61056729376917304022009-12-25T15:50:00.000-08:002011-10-06T20:05:31.015-07:00Spearmint, the HerbI love herbs.
